Debunking the Myths: Why Direct Primary Care is the Key to Affordable Primary Care
For many of us, the traditional doctor’s visit has become a source of stress rather than a source of healing. You might wait weeks for an opening, only to spend more time in a crowded waiting room than you do with your actual physician. It’s a hurried, clinical experience that often leaves you feeling like a number on a chart rather than a person with a story.
When I founded True Insight Direct Care, I chose to leave that system behind to restore what had been lost: a genuine, unhurried relationship between a doctor and a patient. My goal is to provide a sanctuary where you are heard, seen, and supported as a whole person—mind, body, and spirit—by offering affordable primary care without the typical insurance headaches.
Because this model differs from traditional healthcare, there are many questions and misconceptions about how it works. That’s why I’m pulling back the curtain and debunking five common myths about direct primary care (DPC) to show you how this approach makes affordable primary care a reality for your family.
Myth 1: "DPC is only for people without health insurance."
Many people assume that because I don’t bill insurance, my practice is only for those who are uninsured. In reality, many of my patients do have insurance.
The difference is that you use your insurance for what it’s actually designed for: major, unpredictable events. For everything else—the day-to-day care and chronic disease management—you use your membership to secure reliable, affordable primary care.
When it comes to labs or imaging, I always look for the path that serves you best. I can submit orders to outside facilities that will bill your insurance directly. However, if we know a specific test might be rejected or carry a high out-of-pocket cost, we simply opt for our wholesale cash pricing instead. By removing the insurance middleman where it doesn't serve you, we remove the barriers to your health.
Myth 2: "It’s too expensive for my budget."
There is a common misconception that personalized, direct care is a luxury reserved only for the wealthy. While my patients receive a premium experience, I am committed to providing affordable primary care that is approachable for everyone.
I am passionate about providing quality care that is affordable, and to be honest, I find it disheartening when traditional practices mark up services for extreme profit. I believe in providing great care because it’s the right thing to do—not greedily profiting off someone’s unfortunate health circumstances.
I prioritize transparency with a flat monthly membership fee. When you consider that this covers unhurried visits and direct access to me, it often fits comfortably within a family’s monthly budget—frequently costing less than a standard gym membership or a couple of dinners out. Because I also offer wholesale pricing on labs and medications, this model remains the most consistent way to receive high-quality, affordable primary care. To profit off someone’s desire to optimize their health and wellness is simply not who I am.
Myth 3: "The quality of care is the same as a traditional clinic."
I would argue the quality of DPC is significantly higher than a traditional clinic—and here’s why. In the traditional system, a physician might be responsible for 2,000 to 3,000 patients. This volume forces appointments to be rushed, leaving little room for anything beyond treating a single symptom.
By limiting my practice to a small fraction of that size, I have the time to look at the whole picture. As a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.), I believe that your structure and function are deeply interrelated. This means I can use osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to physically help restore balance and support your body’s natural ability to heal, rather than simply handing you a prescription and rushing to the next room. Choosing affordable primary care should never mean sacrificing quality; it should mean finally having a physician who has the time to listen.
Myth 4: "I’ll get the same level of expertise at a big-box clinic."
One of the most important distinctions with our DPC memberships is physician-led care. In many corporate healthcare systems today, you are frequently seen by advanced practice providers (APPs) like physician assistants (PAs) or nurse practitioners (NPs). In the current system, APPs are rarely supervised in the way they were intended to be because doctors simply don't have the time or energy to provide that mentorship.
While these providers have a place in healthcare, the training and knowledge required to become a board-certified physician are significantly more advanced. At True Insight, affordable primary care means you get the full expertise and undivided attention of your board-certified, dedicated physician, rather than being passed off to a PA or an NP.
Myth 5: "It’s inconvenient to leave the traditional system."
Sometimes people worry that moving to a private practice might make their healthcare harder to manage, but in reality, the opposite is true.
Medical Records
First and foremost, I also want to ease any concerns about your medical records. If you’ve been seen at a local corporate system, I have direct clinical access through an affiliate agreement. This means I can easily download your important labs, imaging, or files directly into your chart with my practice—it’s easy peasy and keeps your care seamless!
Waiting Time
Inconvenience in healthcare usually comes from waiting weeks for an opening or hours in a waiting room. In the traditional corporate system, a physician might have thousands of patients on their roster, and their schedule is often filled with patients from other practitioners when their schedules overflow.
By contrast, I intentionally limit my practice to a maximum of 500 members. This smaller census means I am actually available when you need me, allowing for same-day or next-day appointments that work around your life, not the other way around.
At True Insight Direct Care, we prioritize affordable primary care that respects your time and works around your schedule. When you arrive at our office, you are seen promptly in a calm, welcoming environment. For those times when you don't necessarily need an in-person visit, we can often handle your concerns via a quick text, phone call, or video visit—saving you a trip and keeping your day on track.
