Insight-ful Inquiries!

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a healthcare model where patients pay a flat monthly or annual fee directly to their doctor for comprehensive primary care services. This typically includes routine visits, preventive care, chronic disease management, and easy access via phone or email, without additional copays or insurance involvement.
-
You have unlimited visits– no copays or deductibles! Often times, you can avoid a visit altogether with a direct call or message to Dr Barrett directly!
You save money with access to discounted medications, labs, and imaging. Dr. Barrett partners with other private practices and national DPC groups to secure lower prices and that savings is passed directly to members.
Furthermore, with the benefit of comprehensive DPC care, members often save money on insurance premiums. Patients opt for higher deductible or catastrophic plans with lower premiums to cover a major illness or injury.
-
No! Although DPC and concierge are similar…
They both offer personalized care for a membership fee, but they differ in cost structure and focus. DPC has lower fees and avoids insurance, while concierge medicine often includes (much) higher fees and may bill insurance alongside the membership.
There is a reason we eliminate insurance! It makes direct, personalized care affordable to everyone.
-
Physicians that enjoy practicing medicine and love their patients still need a break every now and then! It’s important for a strong work-life balance and overall wellness! At these times, members will be given plenty of advance notice of Dr Barrett’s time away and she will monitor patient needs remotely when possible. She will have another qualified physician available for urgent needs.
-
Membership is extremely affordable and in fact, is often less than the average cell phone bill or expense of dining out! For one flat monthly fee, you get unlimited office visits, treatment for acute illness or minor injuries, office procedures, and in-office diagnostic testing.
Members also have access to budget-friendly medication, labs, and specialists when needed.
This is all without long wait times or copays!
-
We treat a wide variety of common chronic conditions– high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, COPD, diabetes, and thyroid disease. Dr Barrett is able to evaluate symptoms and only refers to specialists when absolutely necessary, for rare, or complicated conditions.
-
Dr Barrett has a strict policy about prescribing controlled substances (regulated medication due to addiction or risks of use). They are never prescribed outside of an office visit, and are never prescribed at the first visit. Dr Barrett rarely prescribes controlled substances chronically. True insight Direct Care is NOT a pain clinic.
If there is a medically necessary reason to prescribe such medication, members are expected to return to the office regularly for evaluations as dictated by North Carolina State Boards. Further, we participate in electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) monitoring. Prescriptions cannot be mailed, faxed, or written in paper form. They are no longer accepted by pharmacies.
Dr Barrett utilizes the North Carolina Controlled Substance Database as required by law to see if patients are prescribed controlled substances elsewhere. If you transfer into the practice, please be prepared to provide a copy of previous prescriber’s record establishing a diagnosis with the medication name, dose, and instructions.
Your safety– frankly, your life– my license, and our reputation are too valuable to not do things per protocol, and follow state and federal guidelines precisely.

We recommend you check out the detailed list of services we offer here. The simple answer is all care needed to prevent, treat, and maintain your best health!
This includes annual comprehensive physical exams, sports physicals, evaluation of new symptoms, treatment of illnesses or injuries, screening exams, referrals for preventative tests, and in-depth laboratory analysis as needed and/or desired to help you achieve optimal health.
Dr. Barrett prides herself on education and helping patients understand their health, however that may look. Exercise and nutrition guidance and education are included in membership and are central to overall wellness.
-
Dr Barrett will help coordinate care with your hospital team. Hospital fees and providers giving care in-hospital, however, are not covered under our membership. This is when insurance would apply. You would owe the costs dictated by your insurance policy. Unfortunately, True Insight Direct Care does not have control over hospital fees. Upon discharge, however, Dr Barrett will coordinate your care when you return home, ensuring a seamless transition! She can even provide home visits if needed!
-
Yes, of course! That is one of the wonderful benefits of True Insight! There is no answering service between you and your physician! Although we prefer to answer routine needs during office hours to preserve our family’s wellness, Dr Barrett knows first hand that illness and injuries don’t follow typical banking hours!
-
Not a problem! Direct primary care gives you access to Dr Barrett directly! Send her a message or give her a call to let her know the circumstances and she’ll do her best If you have a medical problem out of town, Dr Barrett is just a phone call or video visit away!
-

We encourage feedback, as our goal is always to improve our services.
We kindly request a 30-day written notice of cancellation.
If you choose to rejoin, re-enrollment fees will apply.
-
Absolutely not! That is the premise of our model! We cut out the middleman and it helps us both!
Taking out the middleman allows healthcare to be individualized and affordable.
We do what is best for you, without the obstacles and barriers from insurance.
-
We encourage you to take advantage of the benefits True Insight can offer, especially if you don’t have insurance! In fact, because we operate completely independent of the insurance system, our services are not reimbursed by insurance policies.
-
The answer here is about as clear as mud, unfortunately.
FSA plans depend on the employer, as they generally set the rules. HSAs cover prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease, so True Insight should qualify for these accounts.
Dr. Barrett went into medicine, however, and not healthcare politics! Therefore, we recommend talking to your plan administrator or a tax advisor. The IRS considers DPC fees as a “prepayment” for medical services and not a “qualified medical expense.” (Yes, Dr Barrett rolls her eyes here, too!)
-
Absolutely! Your membership fee, however, cannot be submitted to Medicare for reimbursement.
There is a waiver form you’ll need to sign (mandated by Medicare) that declares neither you or Dr Barrett will bill Medicare for services rendered.
Medicare or medicare supplement plans will still cover medications, specialists, imaging, etc provided outside of True Insight, just like any other member insurance plan.
-
We highly recommend you still carry a health insurance policy when able. It’s important to have (like car insurance) for those unexpected major health events. But just like your car policy, it’s not really for routine maintenance!
Insurance policies like high deductible plans or share plans ensure some coverage for needs such as hospitalizations or if a specialist is necessary.
We recommend talking with your insurance broker to find the best policy to suit your individual needs. For routine, everyday health care, let Dr Barrett lead you in a personalized, proactive approach that can prevent or delay the need to use an insurance policy in the first place!!
-
Direct Primary Care is the perfect partner to insurance. True Insight saves you the expensive copays, high deductibles and incessant out-of-pocket expenses that insurance-based care generates!
Keep insurance as it should be– the “just in case things happen.” Use True Insight for everything else– your annual exams, sports physicals, medication management, preventative care, screening services, management of chronic illnesses.
Let True Insight be your body’s preventative maintenance mechanic! Leave the insurance to cover the major collisions, if they happen!
-
Our goal is to provide care that is more than an annual check-up and “okay, bye!” Dr. Barrett is truly focused on a proactive approach.
What’s your goal?
We’re here to help you achieve it. We want you to live longer and suffer less. We want your health span to equal your lifespan! Dr Barrett knows first hand what poor health can do to quality of life. And if you’re healthy, let’s tweak it and optimize your health. No one wants “average!”
Seriously. DPC practices like True Insight are the only healthcare models that reward the physician for keeping you healthy!
-
Dr Barrett (and by extension, her husband) have lived on both sides of the stethoscope! She was a patient long before she went to medical school, and continues to live daily with chronic medical problems. This is true empathy! She might not have the exact same condition, but she understands the “second job” of achieving and maintaining the healthiest self.
-
Absolutely! There is no better gift than that of good health and compassionate care! Your friends or family would get exponential benefits from such an meaningful gift! Ask us how to register a gift membership!

A D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) is a fully licensed physician who practices medicine, performs surgery, and prescribes medication, just like an M.D. (Doctor of Medicine). D.O.s receive additional training in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), a hands-on approach to diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal issues. They often emphasize a holistic approach to care, focusing on the interconnectedness of the body's systems and preventive medicine.
-
Osteopathic manipulative treatment is a very broad category. It can involve simple techniques that take only a little bit of time and energy, or it can involve head-to-toe treatments to comprehensively address musculoskeletal complaints.
Dr. Barrett will routinely incorporate simple treatments as medically necessary (for instance, in treating MSK back pain or helping to relieve symptoms of congestion). However, comprehensive treatment, aside from requiring additional time, requires physical effort, and for that reason alone, an additional fee may apply.

During medical school, we first adopted a Basset Hound mix named Sweet Pea. She brought us much joy and “therapy,” that we soon found ourselves adopting Daisy, after relocating for residency.
It slowly became an addiction! Willow was added and seemed to “balance” the high energy of Daisy and the laid-back ways of Sweet Pea.
After graduating residency and relocating to Wake Forest, the fur babies seemingly multiplied, and we never turned back! A boxer mix, Ivy joined the pack a couple years later, followed later again by Hazel. Last to join us in 2023 was Buttercup– a creamy labrador who retired from the cruel role in backyard breeding.
Our son, Landon, despite growing up with dogs, always showed an inclination for cats. We secretly blame Grandma sharing funny cat videos! In 2024, orange tabby’s Pumpkin and Pancake joined our home.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the hamster, Waffles, as Landon’s first self-selected pet!
It’s tough to say who rescued who, but we wouldn’t change it for anything.
