Snap, Crackle, Pop: OMT
I’ve always appreciated having Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) in my skill set. It’s one thing to diagnose and prescribe, but there’s something deeply satisfying about using my hands to actually fix a problem in real-time. A rib out of place? I can nudge it back where it belongs. A headache stemming from a tight neck? Let’s get that sorted out. A patient who walks in stiff as a board and walks out moving like they just discovered yoga? That’s the good stuff.
I realized early in my career just how powerful OMT could be. One of my first patients came to see me after an extensive ER workup for chest pain—EKG, labs, imaging, the whole nine yards. Everything was normal, but the pain persisted, leaving them frustrated and anxious. A simple visit to me—his new PCP— and I found the real culprit: a rib slightly out of place. A few gentle adjustments, and suddenly, they could take a deep breath without wincing. Their relief was immediate, and I’ll never forget their mix of gratitude and disbelief: “Wait… that was it?” Yep. That was it.
And that’s exactly why I love offering OMT. Pain relief? Check. Better mobility? Absolutely. The ability to take a deep breath again and suddenly realize, “Wow, I didn’t realize how tight my rib cage was before!” You bet. There’s something fun about watching patients rediscover how their body is supposed to feel—like they’ve been living with a leaky faucet for years, only to have someone finally come and fix it.
People come in for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes, it’s the smallest adjustments that make the biggest impact. And nothing beats the moment when a patient skips down the hallway delighted at how much better they feel. Seriously. It’s happened— and more than once!
That’s the goal… everyone skipping around True Insight. Ha! But seriously, let’s joint together to prevent the leak, fix the faucet using all the tools available if it does happen to bust a leak, and stop wasting everyone’s time covering the problem with duct tape, shall we?!
