Is it too Late to Get a Flu Shot in the New Year?
As the calendar flips to a fresh start, many of us are setting new intentions—perhaps focusing on better nutrition, more movement, or simply scheduling that much-needed downtime (I hear you!). While you’re planning how to make this year your healthiest yet, there’s one simple, preventative step I want to make sure you consider: getting your flu shot.
The question I often hear around this time is, “Is it too late to get a flu shot?” The short answer is almost always no, it’s not too late.
Why January is Still Prime Time for Protection
It's an easy assumption to think that flu season ends in December. However, in Raleigh, Wake Forest, and across the country, the flu typically peaks much later—often in January, February, or even March. Because it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide maximum protection, getting your shot now means you’ll be covered when the virus is actively spreading.
If you’ve been putting it off, please know that the effectiveness of the flu shot is determined by when you receive it, not when the new year begins. When a patient asks me, “Is it too late to get a flu shot?” I see it as a wonderful opportunity to still protect themselves and their loved ones for the rest of the season. And if you have contracted the flu right around the time of your vaccination, I want to reassure you that the vaccine itself is not a live virus so it can’t actually cause the flu! It just means that your body caught the virus a few days before your shot, or just after, and the vaccine hadn’t had the crucial two weeks yet to build its full, protective shield.
It’s Easy to Find Protection Near You
I want to make sure everyone feels empowered to take this preventative step. You don't need an appointment at a doctor's office. If you're wondering, “Is it too late to get a flu shot?” the good news is that pharmacies, grocery stores, and local clinics are excellent, convenient places to get vaccinated right now. Most do not require an appointment, and it’s usually quick and hassle-free. This season, I don’t have them in stock simply because I haven’t had enough need from those not using insurance to order an entire batch, but there is likely a place close to your home that can see you quickly!
As a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), I view health through the lens of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. While we discuss lifestyle, nutrition, and even use hands-on gentle care like OMT to ensure your body’s structure and function are in harmony, preventative measures like vaccination are the foundation of true wellness. While they’re not a 100% guarantee, they’re worth the effort to minimize the severity if you get infected and to lessen the chance of bad outcomes.
